The Routzon residence was designed to take the best advantage of an extraordinary site with 360 degree views, including a very special westerly view to the Continental Divide. The site is in a remote part of the Rocky Mountains above 9,000 feet. The 120 foot diameter circular parcels ensured privacy among the sites. The design solution revolved the house components around a rock formation at the center of the site. (The owner had spotted a mountain lion while standing on that formation before construction began.) This integration of the home around the outcropping weaved the natural elements of the site with the house components symbiotically.

The log and beam construction was infilled with 2 x frame construction to achieve a well-insulated building envelope. A tough fibre cement shingle for the roof colored to match the rock outcroppings addressed both functional and aesthetic concerns in this sometimes harsh enviroment. The clients' vision and judgment helped make the experience and result very special.
